Forest Stewardship Council certification for responsibly managed forests.
The Forest Stewardship Council certifies forests, paper, timber and wood products against ten principles covering legal compliance, indigenous rights, worker rights, community relations, environmental impact, management planning, monitoring, conservation of high-value forests, and plantation management.
Forest management certifications cover individual forests; chain-of-custody certifications track timber through every processor and trader. Both require annual third-party audits by FSC-accredited certification bodies.
Tree-and-checkmark FSC logo with one of three sub-labels: FSC 100% (fully certified), FSC Mix (blended with controlled sources), or FSC Recycled.
PEFC and SFI are competing schemes with looser standards in some regions. FSC is generally considered the most rigorous globally, especially for tropical forests.
FSC does not guarantee carbon neutrality of paper or wood products. The FSC Mix label allows blending FSC, recycled, and 'controlled' (non-certified but low-risk) wood — only FSC 100% is fully certified content.
