Your plant-based impact, in numbers you can defend
Every scan, meal and swap becomes a concrete figure: animals not farmed, kilograms of CO₂e avoided, litres of water and square metres of land saved — calculated from published life-cycle data, with the methodology shown.
- Animals, CO₂e, water and land, updated as you log
- Transparent methodology with published sources
- Streaks, milestones and shareable impact cards
- Compassion score that trends over weeks and months
Short answer
The VeggieOS impact tracker converts your logged meals, scans and swaps into estimates of animals spared, greenhouse gas emissions avoided, and water and land saved, using published life-cycle assessment averages. Figures update automatically as you use the app, the methodology and sources are shown openly, and milestones can be shared as images. It is free.

Key takeaways
- Impact is calculated from your actual logged food, not a generic "average vegan" figure.
- Four dimensions: animals, CO₂e, water and land.
- Methodology and sources are published, and estimates are presented as ranges where the science is uncertain.
- Streaks and milestones give the day-to-day motivation that abstract ethics does not.
- Shareable cards make the numbers useful in conversations, not just private.
Abstract ethics are hard to sustain. "Animal agriculture is a major driver of emissions" is true, but it does not tell you what your Tuesday lunch did. Concrete feedback does: it is the reason step counters changed walking habits when general advice to exercise did not.
The impact tracker turns your ordinary app activity into that feedback loop. Scans, logged meals, converted recipes and product swaps all carry impact figures, and they accumulate into a picture of a week, a month and a year that is specific to you.
How it works
- 1
Use the app normally
Scan products, log meals and follow your plan — no separate impact data entry exists.
- 2
Each action is quantified
Foods are mapped to life-cycle assessment averages for emissions, water and land, and to animal-equivalent figures.
- 3
Totals accumulate
Your dashboard shows today, this week, this month and all time, with trend charts.
- 4
Milestones unlock
Reaching one hundred meals, a year of scanning or a thousand kilograms of CO₂e avoided triggers a milestone card.
- 5
Share if you want
Export a clean image of your figures for friends, family or social media.
Why people use it
Motivation that lasts
Visible progress sustains habits far better than intention alone.
Numbers you can defend
Sources are cited, so your figures survive a sceptical conversation.
Honest ranges
Where estimates vary by region and farming system, ranges are shown rather than false precision.
Beyond carbon
Water, land and animal figures capture what a carbon-only view misses.
Family-friendly
Children and sceptical relatives engage with concrete figures far more readily than with arguments.
Rewards imperfection
Every plant-based meal counts, including in a mostly-omnivore household.
How the figures are calculated
Emissions, water use and land use come from peer-reviewed life-cycle assessment averages for food categories — most prominently the global meta-analysis of roughly 38,000 farms published in Science — combined with regional adjustments where reliable data exists.
Animal-equivalent figures use published average yields to convert avoided products into animal counts, expressed as fractions where appropriate. VeggieOS deliberately avoids inflated round numbers; where the plausible range is wide, the range is shown.
The compassion score
Alongside raw totals, a compassion score summarises the ethical weight of your recent choices into a single trend line: consistently plant-based scans and meals push it up, animal-derived purchases pull it down, and it recovers over time.
It is designed as a trend rather than a grade. The purpose is to make direction of travel visible, not to produce guilt about a single week.
Why individual numbers still matter
Individual action is not a substitute for systemic change, and VeggieOS does not claim otherwise. What personal figures do well is sustain the behaviour that makes collective change possible — and make the argument concrete when you have it with someone else.
Demand signals also travel: consistent plant-based purchasing shows up in retail data, which is one of the mechanisms that has expanded plant-based ranges in mainstream supermarkets over the past decade.
Real situations it solves
Staying motivated in month three
The novelty fades; the growing numbers do not.
Explaining your choice
Answer "does it even make a difference?" with your own data and cited sources.
Veganuary and challenges
Track a challenge month and see exactly what it added up to.
Teaching
A concrete, visual entry point for classrooms and family conversations.
Advocacy
Shareable cards give campaigners a personal, credible artefact.
Flexitarian progress
Every avoided animal product registers, which keeps partial change encouraging.

Frequently asked questions
- How are the impact figures calculated?
- From published life-cycle assessment averages for food categories, mapped to the foods you log, with regional adjustments where reliable data exists.
- Are the numbers exact?
- No, and no honest calculator claims that. They are best-available estimates, shown as ranges where the underlying data varies widely.
- What counts as an animal spared?
- Avoided animal products are converted using published average yields, expressed as fractions where a whole animal is not involved.
- Do I have to log everything?
- No. Normal use of the scanner and planner generates impact data automatically.
- Can I share my impact?
- Yes, as an image card that includes the headline figures.
- Does it work if I am not fully vegan?
- Yes. Every plant-based meal and swap counts, which is the point.
- Where can I read the methodology?
- It is linked from the impact screen and explained in the app, including the sources used.
- Is it free?
- Yes, like every other part of VeggieOS.
