What the scanner actually checks
Every ingredient string is normalised (case, punctuation, E-numbers, local synonyms) and then matched against three lists: definitely animal-derived, definitely plant-based, and source-dependent. Gelatine, carmine, isinglass, lanolin, whey and casein fall in the first list. Lecithin, glycerin, stearic acid, E471, natural flavourings and refined sugar fall in the third.
